Mastering Homemade Best Tater Tots In The Air Fryer

Air fry a batch of frozen tater tots anytime you want to! Making homemade tater tots is simple. It works well to prepare in advance and store in your freezer! If you’re not in the mood to make them yourself, don’t worry. The timings and temperatures in this recipe also apply to air fryer tater tots from the store.

My spouse is a huge fan of tater tots and will always pick them over french fries. He loved the crispy potato tots I cooked in my Ninja My goal was to learn how to create a homemade version Foodi air fryer. I started by preparing store-bought frozen tater tots.

The fact that you have control over the ingredients is the most crucial aspect of cooking!

The process of the store-bought garbage. When you look at the components, you’ll see oil listed as the second ingredient. Different kinds are used.

When preparing your own, you can use as little or as much oil as you wish. You can customize the sour mix by altering the spices and lowering the salt content.

POTATOES

The main component of homemade tater tots is potatoes. The best choice for the best results is russet potatoes. In some places, they’re called floury potatoes. Golden potatoes, such as Yukon Gold, or new potatoes tend to be waxy. They give the finished tater tot a sticky texture rather than a light and crispy texture.

you could use the same method to create sweet potato tots with sweet potatoes, but I haven’t done it yet. As with the Russet potatoes, the sweet potatoes must be par-cooked, chilled, and grated. To suit your tastes, you can change the seasonings. If you want them to crisp up more, make sure to coat them with cornstarch. This is the key to creating crispy sweet potato fries, I discovered when testing my recipe.

SEASONINGS

You can embellish your baked pastry with any decorations you choose. You can use onion powder instead of the fresh squeezed onion that I used. I use one teaspoon of onion powder or granules. I also sprinkle on some garlic powder. One or two minced garlic cloves might be used in its stead.

While salt is essential for anything with potatoes, you can use a substitute for salt or cut it down.

Use your imagination while combining the spices! You can alter the flavor by adding various dry spices. Use your preferred seasoning blend. You can use taco seasoning, Italian seasoning, or ordinary salt and black pepper! You can split the mixture in half and use different pours for each half.

CORNSTACH & OIL

These are technical choices. If you follow the table exactly, the outcomes will be superior. I’ve tried a few methods with potato tots. I’ve found that brushing them with oil and cornmeal works the best. To make the potato mixture come together, you must add sweet potatoes, also known as corn.

I’ve never tried using other alternatives in a recipe, but you can use them instead of corn. For the combination, you can use some xanthan gum, potato flour, or arrowroot. You can use flour or rice flour to flavor the outside of the tater tots. But, you must cover them with oil. Otherwise, the flavor will come from the flour.

About the oil, feel free to use whatever type of neutral oil that you choose. My go-to oil is avocado oil. Canola or vegetable oil are also options for air frying frozen steak fries in the air fryer baskets. Olive oil can add flavor to the Tater Tots that you might not enjoy, so I would steer clear of it.

After tossing in the cornstarch, you can also coat the tater tots with cooking spray.

Don’t bother with the cornstarch coating on the outside if you’re not using oil. The tater tots will cook through fine, although they might brown and not be as crispy.

Don’t worry if this is your first time preparing potatoes at home it’s simple! Creating them is the most difficult aspect but it also becomes easier after you get the hang of it!

I’ll show you exactly how I form them in a little video that I’ll publish a little later in this post Each one requires a few seconds to complete.

PREPARE MISE EN PLACE

Boil the potatoes and let them sit for a few hours or overnight to cook this dish. A day or two before I intend to make the potatoes, I consume the potatoes. Refrigerate the fish for 2-3 hours to ensure even cooling and draining. Do this if you plan to prepare everything at once. Fish cracks and size will increase if you try to stop the hot sauce.

I use the Ninja Foodi Pressure Cooker & Air Crisper for this dish. I can pressure cook and air fry the potatoes in the same appliance. I adore it so much! Instead, you can cook the potatoes in whatever electric pot you own. If you don’t own a pressure cooker, you can boil the potatoes on the stove for roughly 10 to 12 minutes. Or you can reheat them in the microwave for 5 to 7 minutes.

Time-Saving Methods for Effective Cooking with Mise en Place

  • Microwave: 5–7 minutes, piercing the potatoes with a fork
  • Boiling: 10-12 minutes, leave the potatoes whole and unpeeled

Cook the potatoes until they are tender, but not so tender that they crumble. The air fry time is not long enough to cook the mashed potatoes. This stops small children from tasting like raw potatoes. I found that using the 5-point fast-release pressure cooker to cook potato wedges is a great idea. Larger grates (those weighing more than 8 ounces per potato) will have roughly 6-7 pieces of each component.

You should cook potatoes whole, including the skin. When they’re cold, they peel. Fill the pressure cooker’s inner pot with one cup of water. Place every potato in a mound or basket. You want to serve them with boiling potatoes or water. Make sure the valve is closed before installing the pressure cap. After five minutes of cooking, perform the emergency release. Set the computer speed to 7 minutes if the giant baked potatoes weigh more than 8 pounds apiece.

Release the pressure right away after the allotted time has elapsed. For at least two hours, refrigerate the sauce. I always keep them in the refrigerator in a jar. You can freeze potatoes for up to two days.

MAKING THE HOMEMADE TATER TOT MIXTURE

After the potatoes have cooled down to handle (they may still be somewhat warm). Using a sharp knife, remove the skin. To shred the potatoes, you can use a food processor fitted with a shredding blade or a box grater crispy tater tots. I grate using a box grater with the big holes. Put all the peeled potatoes in a big basin and grate them.

Next, chop and peel the cheese, then cut the glass using the little hole in the box. A small, dry onion yields about 2 tablespoons of chopped onion. Squeeze the chopped onions to remove their juice. Otherwise, your potato combination will be too soft. Although I prefer to drizzle with raw onion, you can use 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of sesame oil or onion powder in its place.

They won’t hydrate in the potato combination. I haven’t tried using dry minced onions. I’m not sure if the texture would be acceptable. Scoop out as much juice as you can from the grated onion and distribute it over the potato dish. In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch and seasonings. Sprinkle the mixture over the shredded potatoes. Toss everything together with your hands. You’re done mixing when there’s no more cornstarch visible.

FORMING THE HOMEMADE TATER TOTS

For a tater tot of regular size, one spoonful of potato mixture will be used for each one. Use half a spoonful to make little portions, then lower the heat so they don’t get too hot to eat before they brown. To measure, I like to use a metal spring or my tiny, pampered chef’s spoon. For neater young ones, a metal point aids in trimming long strands. You can use an ordinary eating spoon.

Form one tablespoon of the potato mixture into a cylinder by squeezing it in the palm of your hand. This is how the tater tots are made. Rotate the cylinder in your palm by pressing on its top and bottom with your thumb and forefinger. This produces a smooth potato tot that resembles store-bought frozen ones!

Put each formed tater tot onto a baking sheet pan coated with paper. You only need parchment paper if you plan to freeze the tater tots before air-frying them. This quick movie is simpler to watch than the still images above. It demonstrates how I form them.

  2. Why do my tater tots fall apart in the air fryer?
